Battery dead or low? Here’s how to jump start it safely:

Jump-Starting A Weak Or Dead Automobile Battery:

Car batteries can fail for a number of reasons but regardless of why it happens, it’s never convenient! Fortunately when a battery fails, a jump start often is the best short term way to get the motor going.

Jump Start Safely

Jump starting is a common practice but to be done safely and properly AAA recommends the following procedure:

Step by Step

1. Position the Cars
   Position another vehicle (the “booster vehicle”) with a healthy battery and the disabled car so they do not touch each other. Be sure both batteries are of the same voltage.
2. Ignitions Off
   Turn off the ignitions of both vehicles and set the parking brakes. Place automatic transmissions in “Park” and standard transmissions in neutral.
3. Read the Manuals
   Read the owners’ manuals for BOTH vehicles for any special directions. Unless given different directions in the owner’s manual, use the booster cables in the order presented in Steps 5 & 6.
4. Wear Safety Gear
   Wear safety glasses and gloves while using cables.
5. Stay Alert
   Some components in the engine compartment can run with the engine being on, ex. fans. Be careful where you place your hands.
6. Connect the Positives
   Clamp/connect one end of the positive (+) booster cable to the positive (+) post of the dead battery. Connect the other end of the same cable to the same marked post (+) of the booster battery.
7. Connect the Negatives
   Connect the second, negative (-) booster cable to the other post of the booster battery. Make the final negative (-) booster cable connection on the engine block of the stalled vehicle away from the battery.
8. Start your Engines
   Start the booster vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. Then, start the disabled vehicle and keep it running. If the disabled car does not start by jump-starting, there may be problem with the alternator, starter or another component of the electrical system.
9. Disconnect the Cables
   Remove the cables in the reverse order of connection, being very careful not to let the booster cable clamps touch each other or come in contact with car parts.

Be sure to drive the formerly disabled car for at least 30 minutes so that the battery can charge before turning it off. As soon as possible have the battery checked by an auto repair professional. A dead battery could indicate other problems with your car or may require replacement.

Having a flat tire when driving is always a problem. But experiencing a breakdown like a flat tire or blowout while traveling on an interstate highway or other high-speed roadway can present special dangers.

Dealing with a Flat Tire on the Highway:

• Don’t stop in traffic.
• Get your vehicle completely away from the roadway before attempting to change a tire.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Tackle changing a tire only if you can do so without placing yourself in danger.
• Have a qualified mechanic check your vehicle after having a flat tire to be sure there is no residual damage.

Dealing with a Tire Blowout on the Highway:

• At the First Sign of Tire Trouble
  Grip the steering wheel firmly. Turn your emergency flashers on.
• Don’t Slam on the Brakes
  Let the car slow down gradually by taking your foot off the gas pedal.
• Work Your Vehicle Toward The Breakdown Lane or Toward an Exit
• If it is Necessary to Change Lanes
  Signal your intentions to drivers behind and do so smoothly and carefully. Steer as your vehicle slows down. It is better to roll the car to a safe place than it is to stop in traffic and risk a collision.
• Change the Tire
  Changing a tire with traffic whizzing past can be nerve-wracking at best and dangerous at worst. Therefore, it may be best to get professional help (roadside assistance) if you have a tire blowout on a multi-lane highway. Call the authorities in case of an emergency. Don’t stand behind or next to your vehicle. If possible, stand away from the vehicle and wait for help to arrive.

If You’re Involved in a Car Crash

• Stop Your Vehicle Where it is Clear and Safe to do so
  Avoid blocking traffic by moving the vehicle out of the traveled roadway, if possible and legal to do so. In some States it is against the law to move the vehicle from the place where the crash occurred. Know the ordinance in your area.
• Secure your Car
  Turn off your car ignition and activate your hazard lights. Mark the scene of the crash with reflective triangles if available.
• Stay Alert
  When outside your vehicle be aware of your surroundings. Avoid walking in the road and stay out of traffic.
• Be Aware of Potential Criminal Activity
  Criminals may engineer accidents to make you vulnerable to carjacking.
• Check for Injuries
  Make a first aid check of all persons involved in the crash.
• Contact Authorities
  Call the police and, if necessary, fire and emergency medical services.
• Document the Crash
  Gather the names of all persons in the motor vehicles and people who witnessed the crash. Ask to see the other driver’s license and write down the number. Exchange insurance company information. Do not discuss “fault” or make statements about the crash to anyone but the police. Make a quick diagram of where the vehicle occupants were seated and indicate the vehicles’ direction of travel and lane. Also note the date, time and weather conditions. Get a copy of the police report of the crash from the local precinct.
• Remain Calm
  Remember to remain calm, control your emotions, and avoid confrontation with any other persons involved.

Being involved in a car crash can be traumatic and upsetting. You can minimize your odds of being in an accident by training to be a defensive driver. But if a crash does occur, the steps outlined above can help you prepare for the aftermath.

Whether your vehicle is old, new, or somewhere in between, there’s a chance that at some point, you’ll find yourself stuck. In some cases, it will be easy to figure out the cause — and in others, it will be a mystery at least until roadside assistance pulls up with professional help.

Calm Down

Brakes failure while you are driving is a dangerous and horrifying experience. Panicking may result in dangerous driving maneuvers, so it is best to stay calm. Turn on your emergency hazard lights.

Get into the Right Lane

Work your vehicle into the right lane and then toward the shoulder or, if possible, toward an exit. If it is necessary to change lanes, do so only when clear. Watch your mirrors and the traffic around you very closely. Remember to use your directional signal to indicate your intentions to other drivers.

Slow Down Gradually

Let the car slow down gradually by taking your foot off the gas pedal. Simply steer as your vehicle slows and shift the car into a lower gear to let the engine help slow the car.

Shift into Neutral and Gradually Apply the Hand Brake

Once off the traveled roadway, shift into neutral and gradually apply the hand brake until the vehicle stops. If that brake has also failed, direct the car onto a soft shoulder or rub the wheel against a curb which will help you to slow down.

Get off the Roadway

Get the car off the roadway and to a safe place to avoid stopping traffic or being involved in a rear-end collision. When safely off the road, put out reflective triangles beside and behind your vehicle to alert other drivers; keep your emergency flashers going.

Get Assistance

You will need professional assistance. Raise your hood and tie something white to the radio antenna or hang it out the window so police officers or tow truck operators will know you need help.

Don’t stand behind or next to your vehicle; if possible, stay away from the vehicle and wait for help to arrive. It is inadvisable to walk on an interstate. However, if you can see a source of help and are able to reach it on foot, try the direct approach by walking but keep as far from traffic as possible.
